GOD’S SUSTAINING POWER

Psalm 55:22 “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

What a wonderful promise to the people of God; the promise of His sustaining power as burdens are cast upon Him!

In this the second week in the month of January, the economic forecast is no better than it was two weeks ago. Consumers must juggle the funds they have against the rising cost of all goods and services. Wages and earnings remain constant with no increase, but all goods and services for consumption have increased. Another concern this week is the weather. It has gone from rain to colder than usual temperatures throughout the Island. Many individuals have taken out the sweaters and jackets in an effort to keep warm. The comments as individuals tell of how they had to boil water in order to take a bath before going out are sometimes hilarious. This means that additional gas and electricity will be used to boil this water, so there is an added expense.

Amidst all of this, the admonition from the Psalmist, David is “Cast thy burden upon the Lord.” It does not matter the situation you are facing, it does not matter how hopeless it appears to you. David found himself in many dangerous situations throughout his life time. At one point he had to go take refuge in the camps of his enemies as he fled from the wrath of King Saul. He knew trouble, he knew about extenuating circumstances, he knew about fleeing for his life, yet he admonishes us to “Cast our burdens on the Lord.”

Worrying about our situation will not help. Planning to defraud another man out of his goods will not help. Honesty is still the best policy. We have to come together in our families, groups and communities. We need to begin to pool our purchasing power so that we are buying in bulk. Bulk purchases are cheaper than individual purchases. If we have a little extra, let us share with those around us who need the help. Let us begin to invite our neighbours to have a meal with us, if we can. Remember to invite the whole family. Not just the husband, or the wife, but remember the children too. You never know if you are saving some lives by your act of kindness.

God has not abandoned heaven. He is still there and He is still in control of all the situations of our lives. So let us heed the advice of the Psalmist David. “Cast thy burdens, on the Lord. His promise is true. He will sustain thee.

Come and be one of His! “He will not suffer the righteous to be moved.”
